HEATHROW AIRPORT
TERMINAL 1 VOIDS

When the British Airport Authority (BAA) was looking for a suitable system for the upgrading of the passive fire protection throughout Terminal 1 Heathrow Airport, the ultimate choice was the installation of the Cavity Fire Barrier System, PLUS60.

Heathrow Airport handles over 63 million passengers a year, flying to approximately 170 destinations making it the Worlds largest International Airport.

Therefore, adequate fire protection is absolutely paramount for the safety of their passengers and employees. With this in mind the Team were asked to offer their support and experience, as regards both technical and installation advice, in the voids and plant rooms of Terminal 1.

All the installers had to be trained to ensure best installation practice. LPCB were asked to carry out the third party inspection work to ensure that all the product installations had been carried out to the stringent standards specified by BAA, and by implementing the LPCB Certification, the project was completed on time and within the budget.

The Training Officer and Technical Consultants were present during the initial meetings with BAA’s Building Control Officers, Fire Officers, Design Architects, Main Contractors and Installers and were present on site, mainly during the night working periods, to offer assistance and advice to the contractors installing PLUS60.

The project took 18 months to complete and 1000’s of metres of PLUS60 were installed, both vertically and horizontally to completely contain any possible fire and smoke within a small area for a full 60 minutes. This would allow any passengers or employees within the area to evacuate, and the fire to be extinguished, without loss of life and without major damage to the building.
